BIKO Exercise Assist

Degenerative myelopathy (CDRM) is not uncommon, particularly in the German Shepherd, Boxer and Pembroke Corgi. It is a difficult condition to manage either medically or surgically. Whilst the progression of the degeneration can be delayed by dietary supplements, treatment options are very limited. Sooner or later the control over the hind limb deteriorates to the point where walking and particularly turning is difficult. Excoriation of the toes and dorsal surface of the foot typically follows. Affected dogs are well in themselves and owners are often highly motivated. Keeping the dog as active as possible is important to delay progression.

The Biko physio brace has been developed to assist the dog in walking and turning for as long as possible. The system is based on elastic straps which run from a chest harness to the hind feet. As the the hind foot reaches the end of the stride and the weight is transferred to the opposite foot the strap helps to bring the trailing foot straight forward ready for the next stride thereby compensating for the loss of muscle tone.

Dogs suffering from nerological deficits, both temporary and permanent, due to disc pathology will also benefit from the Biko brace.

BIKO Application & Measurements

The brace is simple to apply and is tolerated very well. Dogs resume useful levels of activity significantly improving the length and the quality of their lives. The physiotherapy occurs whenever the dog is walking which makes it more effective than sessional hydrotherapy or physiotherapy. Use of the Biko brace delays euthanasia or use of a cart. Feedback from owners is excellent.

Once fitted the programme supplied should be followed closely for best results. Use of the Biko brace may be combined with other therapies such as physio or hydrotherapy.

Should scuffing continue we recommend the use of Therapaws

HOW TO MEASURE THE PATIENT FOR A BIKO PHYSIO BRACE AND HOW TO USE IT

History of the BIKO Physio Brace

The BIKO Canine Physio Brace was invented by Thomas Hödl. His German Shepherd "Biko" has degenerative Myelopathie and the the movement was getting worse. By keeping an eye on "Biko", the first prototype to assist "Biko" was developed.
The veterinarian, Dr. Markus Kasper, was enthused about the progress of "Biko", and the Canine Physio Brace was applied for a patent. After clinical testing of 8 patients at the "Tierklinik Aspern", under the direction of Dr. Markus Kasper, biko Canine Physio Brace (Hundeexpander in German) was made marketable.

BIKO Feedback

Lisa & her dog 'Dakota'

"Wow folks- I purchased the Biko brace from you last week and just wanted to say what an awesome product it is!  I know it is a temporary fix, but it is great. My dog is up and running around like a pup again! Previously, she would lie on the porch-not wanting to go up and down the stairs. Yesterday-with her brace on- she ran off the porch and chased the deer!  Her attitude improvement brings tears to my eyes.  Didn't know if you have had a lot of feedback on this product, so I thought I'd write and tell you how great it is - Thanks Again!"
